rocks, mountains, islands, water, palm trees

I am drawn to rocks, mountains, islands, water, moons, suns and palm trees. The rocks and mountains have solidity, they are anchors which are essentially unchanging, yet they change visually with the light and weather. The tide goes in and out around them, the landscape changes but the rocks and mountains are always solidly in place for millions of years.

Working with Acrylic on paper, and Acrylic on canvas, inspired during workshops in 2019 and 2020 held by abstract landscape painters Simon Carter in Colchester Essex and David Tress in Solva Pembrokeshire (both represented by Messums Gallery in London).

Paintings I have shown paired with ceramics are inspired by a sense of time and place: A painting ‘St Peter’s Chapel, Bradwell-On-Sea’ shown with porcelain vessels containing shells and sand collected from that beach. ‘Pyefleet flowing onto salt marsh’ shown with fluid bottle shapes, some decorated with flowing oxide lines. ‘Bradwell Power Station Wrapped’, the de-commissioned power station has been wrapped in white (plastic?) and now looks like a Rachael Whiteread sculpture looming on the horizon, shown with 2 small porcelain Bradwell sculptures with lids, inside is coloured glass / shells from the beach nearby.

Vessels

I like to paint my porcelain vessels in a big scale, larger than I can make them (due to the max height in my kiln), to imagine how they would look.
